Magmatism at Passive Margins: Effects of Depth?Dependent Wide Rifting and Lithospheric Counterflow

چکیده
Rifted passive margins exhibit a large variety in the timing, distribution, and amount of magmatism. The factors controlling magmatism during rifted margin formation, remain, however, incompletely understood, partly owing to complex rifting styles. In this study, we use 2-Dimensional numerical models investigate effects depth-dependent wide lithospheric counterflow on formation. Results show that strong crust promotes narrow with sharp transition normal thickness oceanic whereas weak rifting, preferential removal mantle lithosphere, leading formation over-thickened (>18 km) igneous distal margin. Counterflow depleted mantle, contrast, may delay syn-rift magmatism, result exhumed a-magmatic continental at margins. combination results magma-poor margins, some cases excess magmatic activity breakup. Our provide an explanation for contrasting productivity such as observed Lofoten-Vesterålen, Newfoundland, Kwanza Basin, Orange Basin

Rifting and subsidence following lithospheric removal in continental back arcs
It has been suggested that post-orogenic lithospheric removal in continental back arcs promotes extension and surface subsidence. However, the surface response of this process and its primary difference from “classical” back-arc opening have remained uncertain. Here, the back-arc extension process with varying continental mantle lithosphere thickness and thermal heterogeneities is studied by us...

Research at continental rifts, mid-ocean ridges, and transforms has shown that new plates are created by extensional tectonics, magma intrusion, and volcanism. Studies of a wide variety of extensional processes ranging from plate thinning to magma intrusion have helped scientists understand how continents are broken apart to form ocean basins. However, deformation processes vary significantly d...
